Papaya is also know as Pepaya in Indonesian. Despite its ubiquity in Southeast Asian cuisine, the papaya is actually native to the American tropics. Naturalized and grown all throughout Indonesia, the ripe fruit of the papaya is usually eaten raw, without skin or seeds. In northern Celebes, the leaves and flower buds are eaten as stir-fry, while the young unripe fruit is chopped for salads.
